2016 Explore Canada Media Awards of Excellence

Canada’s not cold – it’s cool! Just look at the inspiring content produced by travel media and industry partners showcasing the wide range of exceptional experiences found in Canada.

 

Destination Canada hosts the annual Explore Canada Awards of Excellence to recognize and reward outstanding pieces of content and the efforts made to bring them to life. For the second year in a row, this award program will combine the awards shows from Destination Canada’s premier US media event, Canada Media Marketplace (Northern Lights Awards), and the domestic and international media marketplace, GoMedia Canada.

 

This celebration of stellar content-creation is calling on Canadian and international entrants – from bloggers and journalists to photographers and videographers – to submit their inspired travel tales in five content categories. If you’re a past attendee of GoMedia Canada and/or Canada Media Marketplace in 2013, 2014 or 2015 who has produced travel content about Canada as a result of your attendance, we welcome you to apply.

 

To recognize the efforts of the tourism industry, tourism professionals are invited to submit their public and media relations entries in two additional industry-specific categories. Winners of both categories will be announced at an awards luncheon at this year’s GoMedia Canada in Montreal, Quebec, taking place from October 16-20, 2016.

 

Explore Canada Media Awards of Excellence

As in 2015, rather than judging entries in categories based on media type, and separating Canadian and International entries, the 2016 Explore Canada Media Awards of Excellence will recognize media contributions to great Canadian storytelling based upon themes, regardless of language, market or the media type where a story appeared, be it print, broadcast or online.

 

The following five content category awards are open to all media. Industry partners are also welcome to nominate media and submit on their behalf.

 

1. World-class Attractions, Festivals & Events

Have a great story about hitting up an A-list attraction or spending the week-end at one of Canada’s epic festivals? This is the category for you! Your content should be about awesome experiences that are truly ‘Canadian’ and highlight the best and unique aspects of the country’s goings-on and happenings.

 

Criteria:

      • Travel-related, non-fiction, experience-inspired content.

      • Previous submissions that have not won can be re-submitted.

      • No word count or length limit.

      • One submission per category.

      • Submissions are judged based on overall quality and impact of story, inspiring the audience to think about Canada as a travel destination soon.

      • Details of audience reach and impact through social media channels should also be provided.

      • If your story was published/re-purposed on multiple channels (e.g. print, digital, broadcast, etc.) please provide details.

      • The submission deadline for Media Content Categories is June 24, 2016.

2. Culinary Canada

We all love to eat and luckily for visitors, Canada provides endless culinary delights to tickle their taste buds time and time again. To enter this category, your content should reflect food festivals, restaurants, cafés, bistros, food trucks, wineries, breweries, agri-food excursions and anything else related to the culinary experience.

 

Criteria:

      • Travel-related, non-fiction, culinary-inspired content.

      • Previous submissions that have not won can be re-submitted.

      • No word count or length limit.

      • One submission per category.

      • Submissions are judged based on overall quality and impact of story, inspiring the audience to think about Canada as a travel destination soon.

      • Details of audience reach and impact through social media channels should also be provided.

3. Vibrant Cities

Canadian cities are perfectly placed on the edge of nature, and equally impressive. Content that showcases the myriad of experiences travelers can have “in-town” fit well right here. Whether it’s browsing boutiques in a hip shopping district, taking a stroll through an iconic park, or dancing to street performers this is the category for stories that lure city-dwellers to Canada’s urban playgrounds.

 

Criteria:

      • Travel-related, non-fiction, culinary-inspired content.

      • Previous submissions that have not won can be re-submitted.

      • One submission per category.

      • Submissions are judged based on overall quality and impact of story, inspiring the audience to think about Canada as a travel destination soon.

4. Adventures at all Levels

Most travelers like a touch of adventure and some like it to dominate their entire experience. It might be a light mountain bike ride through an old-growth forest for some, and river rafting down a raging river for others. If you have a piece that brings Canadian adventures to life, bring it on!

5. Natural Wonders

Canada’s awe-inspiring beauty leaves us all feeling breathless. The vastness of Canada’s landscapes, the incredible wildlife that can be observed in their natural setting, the Northern lights that effortlessly illuminate the skies, floating icebergs that meander their way down the coast, the list goes on and on. Your content fits in this category if nature and wildlife are a central theme and create urgency amongst your audience to visit Canada now.

 

Criteria:

      • Travel-related, non-fiction, culinary-inspired content.

      • Previous submissions that have not won can be re-submitted.

      • No word count or length limit.

      • One submission per category.

      • Submissions are judged based on overall quality and impact of story, inspiring the audience to think about Canada as a travel destination soon.

Eligibility & Requirements:

      • The awards are open to all media, regardless of media type, country, language or nationality.

      • Submissions are welcome from past attendees of GoMedia Canada and/or Canada Media Marketplace (2013, 2014 or 2015 events), who have produced travel content about Canada as a result of their attendance.

      • Entries must be travel-related, non-fiction, travel-inspired work about Canada.

      • Previous submissions that have not won can re-submitted.

      • Entrants that won in a category in 2015, are not eligible to enter any piece in that same category in 2016.

      • A piece that has previously won a GoMedia Canada, Northern Lights or Explore Canada Award in any category cannot be re-submitted a second time.

      • There is no word count or length limit.

      • One submission per category.

      • Tourism industry partners may nominate media for awards.

      • Submissions are judged based on overall quality and impact of story, inspiring consumers to think about Canada as a travel destination.

      • Details of audience reach and impact through social media channels should also be provided.

      • All content and collateral must be uploaded into one single document for each entry.

      • Entries hosted at URLs that the candidate does not control should also be submitted in PDF format in the event that the site is modified/removed prior to the judging process.

      • The submission deadline for all the 2016 Explore Canada Awards of Excellence is June 24, 2016.

 

Prizing

In addition to receiving one of five $500 CAD prizes and an artisan keepsake, winners will be featured on Destination Canada channels in post-event communications, and be the subject of a professionally produced video highlighting their award-winning piece. Winners will also be given a digital award badge in the event they wish to feature the accolade on digital properties. We would love to celebrate with you in person, but please note that winners do not need to be in attendance at GoMedia Canada 2016 to be eligible for an award.

 

 

Explore Canada Industry Awards of Excellence

To showcase the important work done by our industry partners, there are two industry categories open to Canadian tourism partners including convention and visitor bureaus, public relations firms, media relations representatives, tourism organizations, transportation, accommodation and other travel and tourism sectors. Submissions are judged based on overall impact and effectiveness.

 

In selecting pieces to submit, industry partners should take into special consideration stories that complement the themes which have been identified the Explore Canada Media Awards of Excellence content categories: world-class attractions and events, culinary Canada, vibrant cities, adventures at all level, and natural wonders.

 

The following two awards are open to industry for submission:

 

1. Best Media Itinerary (2013, 2014 or 2015)

A case study outlining the background, objectives, participants (number of media attendees and type), itineraries, highlights and outcomes of media coverage resulting from the visit must be provided. How were you able to provide journalists with a unique and powerful Canadian experience that resulted in incredible content being created and shared? Please also include details about use of new technologies and social media integration – from enticing images on Instagram to informative Tweets to superb Facebook engagement, and more, if applicable. Please submit your application online.

 

2. Most Innovative PR Campaign (2013, 2014 or 2015)

A case study outlining the background, objectives, innovation and outcomes of media coverage and awareness resulting from the PR campaign must be provided. Please also include details about use of new technologies and social media integration – from enticing images on Instagram to informative Tweets to superb Facebook engagement, and more, if applicable. Please submit your application online.

 

Prizing

In addition to receiving an artisan keepsake, winners will be featured on Destination Canada channels in post-event communications, and be the subject of a professionally produced video highlighting their award-winning work.     • Details if the story was published/re-purposed on multiple channels (e.g. print, digital, broadcast, etc.)
